Friday, April 24 marked the successful first drive-through pickup day for the Hāna Farmers Market Online. First, our local vendors, then market customers, drove through the newly-temporarily-repurposed entrance of the Travaasa Hana Hotel. The hotel has generously offered their facilities and staff time to support the market while the hotel is closed to guests. Market coordinators and volunteers compiled orders that had been placed online, then greeted the over 35 Hana shoppers as they came to pick up their orders.
Kupuna pickups were also coordinated through Ma Ka Hana Ke ‘Ike members of the Ku‘i Club, who handed out kalo and poi, along with soup that was donated as part of incentive gifts local chef Ryan O’Connor made to this organization.
Great turnout for the first week of service in light of the pandemic!
The farmers market had been thriving on Fridays for one month, when suddenly the need to move into protection for our families necessitated a new solution. All considered, this transition has come together quickly with lots of encouragement from market participants.
The Hana Farmers Market Online is a project organized by Hawai‘i Farmers Union United through its Hana Chapter. Kari Hagedorn is the market coordinator and Scott Crawford has been the primary website developer. Mahalo to the Hana Chapter Board and members for supporting our local growers and providing excellent food from our ‘āina to the Hāna community.
